TL;DR · AI Summary

Yang Linfeng, CEO of Onion Academy, argues that using AI solely to create learning shortcuts (e.g., auto-writing homework or instant problem-solving) undermines students’ cognitive construction ability; effective educational AI should support the autonomous learning loop—stimulating motivation, enhancing capability, and providing adaptive tools—not replacing thinking itself.

Key Takeaways

  • Onion Academy sticks to 5–8-minute animated micro-lessons, rejecting trend-drive

Outline

Jump quickly between sections.

  1. Autonomous learning relies on the synergy of motivation, capability, and tools; Onion Academy builds scalable self-study loops via 5–8-minute animated micro-lessons.

  2. AI offers limited efficiency gains in content production, and when deployed to provide shortcuts (e.g., solving problems for students), it damages cognitive development and violates educational princi

  3. True learning outcomes mean students can independently frame problems, break them down, and validate solutions—a skill requiring repeated practice to build neural circuits, which AI cannot replicate.

  4. Onion Academy identifies as a ‘learning company’, prioritizing how to enable spontaneous learning over delivering courses or score improvement, granting strategic resilience amid AI trends.

"How will AI change the way we learn?"

This episode's guest is Yang Linfeng, co-founder and CEO of Onion Academy, who has never been one to chase trends.

While studying computer science as an undergraduate at Harvard, Yang Linfeng co-founded Onion Academy with Zhu Ruochen and Li Nuo in 2013. Their goal was to use educational technology to help more students take control of their own learning.

Years later, when online education funding surged and popular formats like dual-teacher live classes and recorded lectures by star teachers dominated the market, Onion Academy chose not to follow these trends. Instead, they continued using 5~8-minute animated content to engage students in self-study outside of class.

Today, discussing AI, Linfeng avoids trendy technical jargon and focuses more on learning itself.

Rather than being just an education company, Onion Academy is more like a learning company. They have always studied how children can learn spontaneously and independently. This has become even more important today. In a sense, AI is accelerating the return to the true essence of learning.

35:26 Duolingo's learning curve design feels unscientific. I suddenly noticed a sharp increase in difficulty at a certain point, which made me lose motivation to continue. Streaks? That's just a number and a desktop widget. I can't tie sunk cost to this because I've abandoned too many games with similar streak systems.
