- #### Context is the Key to the Agentic Architecture Revolution: a Conversation with Baruch Sadogursky
Michael Stiefel spoke to Baruch Sadogursky about software architecture in the age of agentic AI. LLM can function, albeit stochastically, as reasoning machines capable of interpreting human ambiguity. With the appropriate rigorous context artifacts to control the LLM’s reasoning, software specifications can become the source of truth, while the code becomes a disposable intermediate language.

J. Paul Reed discusses the "ironies of automation" - a 40-year-old concept now amplified by AI. He explains how advanced systems often make human operators more critical, not less, while simultaneously reducing the skills needed for intervention. Through real-world examples of "AI-fueled" incidents, he illustrates why over-reliance on AI can double recovery times and how to maintain resilience.

This week's Java roundup for May 18th, 2026, features news on the GA releases of WildFly 40, Micronaut 5.0, Maven Embedded GlassFish Plugin 8.0, and Apache Fory 1.0; the May 2026 edition of Open Liberty; point releases of Gatherers4j, Apache, and Kafka; and the seventh milestone release of Spring AI 2.0.
#### OpenJDK
The OpenJDK ecosystem saw significant activity during the week of May 18th, 2026, with three JEPs moving from Proposed to Target to Targeted and three JEPs advancing from Candidate to Proposed to Target for JDK 26. For more details, see this InfoQ news story.
#### JDK 27
Build 23 of the JDK 27 early-access builds was released last week, featuring updates from Build 22 that address various issues. More information can be found in the release notes.
Developers are encouraged to report bugs for JDK 27 through the Java Bug Database.
#### GlassFish
Version 8.0.0 of the Maven Embedded GlassFish Plugin includes dependency upgrades and two new features: the ability to start GlassFish in a separate JVM, with all necessary module values for the `--add-opens` and `add-exports` properties by default; and the option to select an Embedded GlassFish version using a configuration property and dependency management. More details are available in the release notes.
#### Spring Framework
The seventh milestone release of Spring AI 2.0.0 includes bug fixes, documentation improvements, dependency upgrades, and new features such as: a new `ToolSpec` inner interface added to the `ChatClient` interface to serve as a single point for registering tool methods; and the use of the `ToolCallAdvisor` class as the default for auto-registering `ChatClient` tools or tool callbacks. For more details on this release, including breaking changes, see the release notes.
#### WildFly
The GA release of WildFly 40 includes bug fixes, documentation improvements, dependency upgrades, and new features such as: support for Jakarta EE 11, which integrates implementations of the Jakarta Pages 4.0, Jakarta WebSocket 2.2, and Jakarta Authorization 3.0 specifications; and support for logging out of an application using RP-Initiated, front-channel logout, and back-channel protocols for OIDC. More details on this release can be found in the release notes.
#### Micronaut
Following three milestone releases and one release candidate, the Micronaut Foundation has released version 5.0.0 of the Micronaut Framework with baselines of JDK 25, Groovy 5, and Kotlin 2.3. Changes in Micronaut Core include: a refactoring of the IoC container and compile-time infrastructure (e.g., bean resolution, qualifier handling, and annotation processing) to reduce runtime work and improve predictability; nullability support using JSpecify; and support for resilience and context propagation with programmatic retry and circuit breaker APIs.
Sergio Del Amo Caballero, Principal Member of the Technical Staff at Oracle and Committer to the Micronaut and Grails frameworks, highlighted the significance of this release, stating:
Micronaut 4 was introduced almost three years ago, so Micronaut 5 is both a major framework release and a broad platform refresh across more than 70 Micronaut modules.
For more details on this release, including breaking changes, see the release notes.
#### Open Liberty
The GA release of Open Liberty 26.0.0.5 includes: full support for the Jakarta EE 11 Platform, Web Profile, and Core Profile; support for running Spring Boot 4.0 applications on Open Liberty; and a fix for CVE-2026-3621, a vulnerability in Open Liberty 17.0.0.3 through 26.0.0.4 where an attacker can spoof an identity, under limited conditions, on an application deployed without configuring authentication and authorization.
#### Gatherers4j
The release of Gatherers4j 0.14.0 introduces new gatherers - `movingGeometricMean()`, `movingGeometricMeanBy()`, `runningGeometricMean()`, and `runningGeometricMeanBy()` - for calculating geometric means; a `filterNotNull()` gatherer that filters out `null` values from the input stream and organizes annotations defined in JSpecify; and a refactor of the `CrossGatherer`, `TypeFilteringGatherer`, and `FlattenSingleOrFail` classes to use greedy integrators. More details on this release can be found in the release notes.
#### Apache Kafka
The release of Apache Kafka 4.3.0 includes bug fixes and new features such as: improvements to Kafka OAuth2 Authentication that add support for `private_key_jwt` client assertions, offering security, flexibility, and compatibility with modern standards; and a cleanup of the mechanism that isolates log directories in a Kafka topic. For more details on this release, see the release notes.
#### Apache Fory
The release of Apache Fory 1.0.0, a polyglot serialization framework that includes Apache Fory Java, includes bug fixes and new features such as: a unified cross-language (Xlang) serialization format as the default mode across all supported languages, featuring compatible-mode reads, simplified field ordering, and improved compatibility of lists and arrays; and a new Maven module and processor, `fory-annotation-processor`, for generating static serializers for Java classes and records annotated with `@ForyStruct`. For more details on this release, see the release notes.
