Just avoid Dec-Feb. Take the harbor boats out to some of the islands. Maybe also take a boat to Provincetown on the end of Cape Cod. Check the museums. Just walk around - Downtown, Back Bay, South End (not the same as South Boston) and the North End. Try to walk/bike on the Emerald Necklace. If you go in the summer, I suggest you rent a car and drive up for a few days to Ogunquit, the Cape, or maybe Martha's Vineyard to relax. Other than traffic and January, Boston is great.
