SpaceX has a $60B option to buy Cursor. I read this twice. Cursor's best models are still Claude and GPT. They launched their own (Composer) in November but it hasn't caught up on code quality. So what SpaceX is paying for is distribution. Not a model. The bet is that xAI's Colossus cluster can train a Cursor-native model good enough to replace Claude and GPT before Anthropic and OpenAI finish their own IDEs. That's the whole race. Two of Cursor's senior engineering leads left for xAI last month. xAI started renting compute to Cursor last week. The $60B option just puts a price tag on the clock. I spend a lot of time with founders asking "what's our moat." Cursor has the user. It doesn't have the model. Distribution without a defensible model underneath is a rental. We'll know in 6-12 months whether that $60B bought a moat or a rental.
