Geopolitical expert Ian Bremmer reveals the three specific reasons President Trump started the Iran war, explaining why each one led him to believe it would be a quick, decisive victory like Venezuela, and why all three assumptions turned out to be wrong. He explains that the first reason was Venezuela's extraordinary success: Trump took out Maduro without a single American casualty, installed a cooperative government, and received praise from every South American leader. This made him believe he could repeat the same playbook in Iran at a bigger scale. The second reason was that in every previous confrontation with Iran, including the assassination of Qasem Soleimani and the 12-day war last June, the Iranians talked tough but never actually hit back against Americans. Trump concluded they would fold again. The third and most important reason was that unlike his first term, where advisors like Mattis and Pompeo would push back on dangerous decisions, his current team is loyal to him first and to the country second, and they shade everything they tell him toward how brilliant he is.
